The devil fish is commonly known as the armored or suckermouth catfish (hypostomus plecostomus). It's originally from South America and was brought to places like Mexico and the US as a popular aquarium fish. In Mexico the fish is referred to as the devil fish because it was first found in the reservoir El Infiernillo (Little Hell) in Michoacán but also because well, they hate the fish in Mexico for all the damage it's caused to native freshwater fisheries.
This fish is commonly consumed in South America but unfortunately still not much of a demand exists in Mexico. The devil fish currently accounts for up to 70% of wild freshwater capture and causes a range of environmental and economic issues.
The lionfish fish (Pterois) is originally from the South Pacific is a popular aquarium fish now found invasive across the Caribbean, Atlantic and Mediterrean. It has a voracious appetite and also outcompetes native species for resources, decimating species like snapper and grouper. Because the lionfish lives among coral reefs and does not bite on hook and line, all lionfish we use is captured by spear while scuba diving.
We manage a series of FDA-registered processing facilities in Tabasco, Mexico where our team processes wild-caught devil fish and lionfish and air dries the fillets. All treats are packaged in bulk and sent to us in Berkeley, California where we inspect and package them in a commercial kitchen before sending them out to you!
Because we make Pezzy from overly abundant, invasive fish, our treats are beyond sustainable. Pezzy treats are reducing our pawprint - every bite actually helps restore native fisheries! Additionally, like other single and limited ingredient treats, our treats are super healthy and (obviously) don't contain any chemical preservatives, grains, fillers or otherwise yucky stuff that you wouldn't want to feed to your pet.
Additionally, because they are made from 100% wild-caught invasive fish that wouldn't be normally found in your pet's diet, our treats are considered an excellent hypoallergenic snack.
And finally Pezzy treats are high in protein and low in fat (body-building dogs anyone?) and come with a bunch of vital micronutrients like iron and potassium. The protein/calorie ratio of our treats is hard to beat, making Pezzy a great option for furry friends that are watching their weight!
Absolutely! All treats are made in our FDA-registered, HACCP-compliant facilities. As mentioned before, our single and limited ingredient treats are made without any chemical preservatives, fillers, additives or any otherwise unsavory thing you wouldn't want your furry friend eating.
Worried about heavy metals associated with seafood consumption? Fear not! First, we regularly test all our fish to ensure it's safe to eat.
Yes! Our single ingredient treats are excellent for both dogs and cats. Especially due to their high protein content, Pezzy treats are awesome just as is for cats but can be shredded up for a tasty topping as well. However, we do not recommend Fishcuits for cats due to the relatively high carbohydrate and fiber content.
Yes! Our treats are completely shelf-stable.
